Concrete Bag Calculator

Concrete Bag Calculator

Already know your volume in cubic yards, from a plan, a quote or one of our other calculators? Enter it here and get the exact number of pre mixed bags to buy, for 80 lb, 60 lb and 40 lb bags.

Bag counts are based on standard yields: an 80 lb bag makes 0.6 cubic feet of concrete, a 60 lb bag makes 0.45 cubic feet and a 40 lb bag makes 0.30 cubic feet. Counts always round up, because a part bag still has to be bought.

How the conversion works

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Divide 27 by the yield of your bag size: 27 divided by 0.6 = 45 bags of 80 lb mix per yard. Worked example: 2 cubic yards is 54 cubic feet, and 54 divided by 0.6 = 90 bags of 80 lb mix, or 120 bags of 60 lb mix.

When bags stop making sense

Bags are the right call for small repairs, post holes and slabs under about 1 yard. At 2 yards you are mixing 90 heavy bags, and at 3 yards it is 135. Past that point a ready mix truck is usually cheaper, stronger and finished in one pour.

Frequently asked questions

How many 80 lb bags are in 2 yards of concrete?

Two cubic yards is 54 cubic feet, and at 0.6 cubic feet per bag that is exactly 90 bags of 80 lb mix.

Which bag size should I buy?

The 80 lb bag gives the most concrete per bag and the lowest count, but it is heavy to lift and mix. The 60 lb bag is the common middle choice. The 40 lb bag suits small repairs and anyone who cannot lift the bigger bags.

Should I add extra bags for waste?

Yes. If your yardage figure does not already include waste, buy about 10 percent more bags than the chart shows. Unopened bags can usually be returned, and running out mid pour is worse.

Does this work for Quikrete and Sakrete bags?

Yes. The standard yields used here match the common bag sizes of the major brands: 0.6 cubic feet for an 80 lb bag and 0.45 cubic feet for a 60 lb bag. Always check the yield printed on your bag, because specialty mixes can differ.
